THE FREEMAN NEWS:  GSIS  MEMBERS  TOLD  TO  AVAIL  GSIS  'CONSOLOAN'

CEBU, MARCH 26, 2007
(STAR) The Freeman - The Government Service and Insurance System is encouraging its members to avail of a single loan that will consolidate all the other existing loans they have with the said agency.

In the recently held media forum GSIS information officer Mitos Galicinao said that government workers can consolidate all their loans into a single loan for convenience.

Dubbed as Conso-Loan Plus, it is a loan window of GSIS that consolidates the members salary, restructured salary, enhanced salary, emergency and summer one-month salary loans.

It can grant a higher loanable amount with the additional amount of twice the basic monthly salary on top of the existing salary loan.

Galicinao said, if a member is in default or experiencing difficulty in facing these loans and have incurred arrears, penalties and surcharges in the process, the Conso-Loan Plus will provide an opportunity to restore the status of good standing as a member and lower monthly amortization.

"But the condonation of penalties can only be enjoyed upon availment for the first time," Galicinao said.

Qualified are active members with no pending administrative and or criminal case provided they have remitted at least three premium payments, not on AWOL and take home pay should be sufficient to cover the regular monthly amortization.

Its interest rate is 12 percent base on diminishing balance.

Loans can be applied through the GSIS E-Card Plus Kiosks for those already with the new cards or manually yet at the GSIS office.

Cuenco twits political foe in church affair The Freeman 03/26/2007

While early campaigning is inevitable, it only seldom happens that political rivals cross each other in the campaign trail. This rare occasion happened yesterday to reelectionist congressman Antonio Cuenco and his challenger in the south district, Jonathan "Atan" Guardo.

Even before the start of the campaign period for local candidates, it is inevitable that incumbent officials seeking for reelection and those aspiring for elective positions would already start soliciting support from various sectors specially the religious group.

The paths of the two crossed when Cuenco was invited in yesterday’s golden anniversary celebration of the Bible Baptist Church along Katipunan Street, barangay Labangon, where he received a plaque of recognition from Pastor Armie Jesalva.

Cuenco was recognized by the Bible Baptist Church for his leadership in the district and his support to the church. Cebu City Mayor Tomas Osmeña was also a recipient of the same plaque of recognition, but the mayor was not able to come.

After receiving his plaque of recognition, Cuenco took the opportunity to solicit the support of the congregation. Though he made a disclaimer at first, saying that it is yet on Friday that local candidates are allowed to start campaigning, but Cuenco was overwhelmed by the more than 14,000 people in attendance.

Cuenco said he could not help but talk about politics especially that his district is being invaded by somebody who is not a Cebuano. The congressman was obviously referring to Guardo, who hails from Surigao.

Without Cuenco knowing it, Guardo was seated just a few meters away from his left, listening to him. Cuenco only came to know later that Guardo was also invited in said church gathering when the pastor started to welcome the other visitors.

But a church member said it was impossible for Cuenco not to have seen Guardo as Cuenco had a commanding view of the congregation. — Fred P. Languido/MEEV
